"Pleasure to see a new face in town. Lets have a look then shall we?" The dwarf waved his hand over his counter in a quick, slightly odd motion. Hal swore he just used sign language, but he didn't catch it. (failed % roll). Hal had just learned the secret language a few months ago from a fellow guild member. The use of body language and hand signs to speak wasn't exclusive to thieves, but it did come in handy.
(ooc): Note if you wish to try and 'speak' in sign or any language other then your native tongue for that matter that is listed on your CAD just work it into your post and I'll let you know if you get your point across.

Hal cursed himself in his head. He wasn't paying attention and he just missed something important. Hal rummaged through his bag for the gold nugget, then he placed it down on the counter and tried to fit in the secret sign as he was taught, hoping to let the dwarf know he was a guild member too.

Jutton stroked his beard while admiring the gold nugget. "Yes, I think we understand eachother fine. Come back into my office. I have a proper scale back there to weigh this in."
The jeweler took Hal through a door and down a set of stone steps. Jutton lit a lantern and handed it to Hal. "Better watch your step." After heading down about 30' the steps leveled out into a three way passage. heading straight he paused at the second door to the left. It was made of iron. The dwarf pulled out a key ring and unlocked a massive pad lock and opened the door. Jutton entered first and motioned Hal to follow. From the entryway the room appeared to be a large office. Pretty sure at this point that Jutton wasn't going to lock him up and toss the key, he cautiously followed. Once inside Jutton bolted the door closed again though it remained unlocked. He sat at his large desk and motioned Hal to one of two comfortable looking, down filled chairs. "So my young thief, what brings you to Garrotten and how may I be of service?"

Hal sighed with relief and sat on one of the chairs. "The usual business. Had a small find earlier at the mines, looking to take care of it before I set out again."
Hal placed the gold nugget on the table, then pulled out the sword and the gold mine map and laid them out for the dwarf to inspect. "I'm not sure if the map would be a good sell, but it might go to someone desperate enough. Unless the guild might like to use it and mine up some gold of it's own." Hal shrugged. "I'm also wondering if there are any specific jobs the guild might have for me? I heard something about a 'Tax Man'?"
(OOC: question, if I got a sizable bounty on my arrest or (hopefully not) death, would other players actually be able to come after me? I'm thinking that would kinda be fun lol)

(I don't really do PvP games. I entertained the idea, but it's really a lose, lose situation in this format. We have some pretty good bouty hunter types as players that an average thief wouldn't stand a chance against. I do allow team ups though so you may be able to get a group together later. Just about everyone has a 'dark' CAD.)
more to come

Jutton does an appraisal on the items. "The nugget is worth ten crowns and I'll toss in another 2 for the map out of good faith. The sword is valuable, but...hard to move. It's dwarven made though so I should be able to find a buyer out of town. I'll give you a hundred gold for all three. As for work, you'll need to speak to 'Goodheart' about that. I can take you to him if your not pressed for time."
Hal shrugged. What else was he doing anyway. Besides it was good manners to meet with the local guild members to let them know you'd be working the area. "Lead on Master dwarf."
"Follow me then." Jutton lead him deeper into his store and deeper meant underground. His jewelry shoppe was just an entrance to what appeared to be a labyrinth of tunnels. Hal tried to keep himself oriented but Jutton continued to distract him with small talk about his family, the unusually hot spring air and word of river pirates. He was also walking very briskly making many turns. He was almost certain that they had even double backed a couple of times. Why, he did believe that Jutton was trying to get him lost. Well that just wasn't going to happen. Or would it. He fretted. Had they been down this tunnel before?

Hal decided to give up on memorizing the tunnels, if the dwarf wanted to turn him in or kill him he probably would have done it already. Plus he knew of the guild, so he has some merit there.
Hal listened politely to the dwarf's stories and stayed close behind. At least to prevent any chance of losing sight of the dwarf.

After ten minutes or so, Hal could hear digging, but he couldn't figure out what direction it came from. Interrupting Jutton from one of his stories Hal commented on it. "Oh that?" Jutton replied. "There was a smuggling ring of dwarfs caught not to long ago. They had mined some tunnels under the town so as to work unseen. When the local Constable and some hired help exposed them all, our local Blacksmith who also happens to own the iron mine in the hills offered to turn the tunnels into a sewer system. The Baron agreed, so what your hearing are dwarfs hard at work improving Garrottens plumbing as it were. I have a couple access points into them and I've payed a foreman off to make sure they don't accidentally spill into my tunnel network. It should prove quite handy for the guild when it's all done. Ah here we are."
The thief and the fence came upon an iron rung latter that lead straight up to a trap door. Jutton handed Hal his torch. "I'll be leaving you now lad. knock twice and the password is Night Runner. Ask for Goodheart. Oh, and if you ever need to lay low or a loan. Come find me." With that the dwarf left back into the darkness.

Hal bid the dwarf farewell as he left, then turned his attention to the ladder. Hal set the torch down and climb up the ladder, when he reached the trap door, he stopped and listened to try and hear anything from the other side.

Hal could hear two persons talking, but the door muffled the words making them unintelligible. A quick, silent jiggle of a handle revealed the door to be locked...as expected.

Hal shrugged and knocked twice on the trapdoor. Night Runner, and ask for Goodheart. Night Runner, and ask for Goodheart.

The trapdoor opened so swiftly the young thief was taken by surprise. He was hauled bodily up and out and tossed unceremoniously onto a wood planked floor. His torch was still clutched in his hand and he quickly looked around to survey the area.
Hal was in a room a good ten by ten feet square, made of stone and dimly lit by an oil lantern hanging on a hook by the only door. The door was of an interior wooden design and didn't appear barred. Just behind him and to the left he could make out two wine barrels with his peripheral vision. On the wall to his left was a rack full of wine bottles and to the right, various gadgets and tools associated with wine as well.
In the room with him was a tall, thin man dressed in dark wool robes sitting on a small three legged stool reading a book or tome. Directly in front and above Hal considering he was still on the ground was a huge and muscular elf. The brutes meaty fists were griping a nasty looking club. "Password or die friend." The elf growled softly.

Hal grunted in pain. "Owww....erg, Night Runner. And was that really nessesary?" Hal stood up slowly and kept his hands in pain sight to avoid provoking the monster of an elf. "Im here to see a Mr. Goodheart." Hal resisted the urge to rub the throbbing pain in his tail bone.

"Hmmm. necessary? Nope. Fun? Yup." the brute replied.
"Leave him alone Sadell. He's obviously guild." The thin, robed man closed his book and lowered his spectacles before standing and helping Hal up. "Greetings from The Garrotten Guild. My name is Kole and you've already met Sadell. Don't mind him. He gets edgy on guard duty. Rarely gets a chance to kill someone you see. He does make a good enforcer though don't you think?" The mans tone was friendly and sincere. "So you wish to see Goodheart? You plan on setting up shop or just passing through?" he inquired. Meanwhile the muscular elf Sadell closed the trap door and leaned his club against the wall and relaxed.

"Depends. I figured I'll see how I fair here, before deciding on if I move on. Also been looking to see if there was any jobs the guild could offer."
