Exert from chapter 1:
Doon walked quickly to the castle. Once he was at a good range to have a good view of the castle he moved slowly to survey the land, to take it all in. He looked for the morning shift reporting for duty. He made mental notes of the larger landmarks. Once he found the service entrance he shuffled his feet through the dust and casually joined the line.

Leading up to the castle proper was a large statue of the human versions of the Trinity Deities. The castle was small by castle standards, but it was made of stone blocks instead of the typical wood fort one usually sees out here on the boarder lands. The Baron must be either rich or else have spent every copper to erect it. It was a square design with 4 rounded towers at the corners. It had a gate house, Main keep and outbuildings. Raised upon a large hill it had a dry moat and draw bridge for added protection. The walls were thirty feet high and probably ten thick. As Doon expected there was a line forming at the gate house. The guards seemed to be giving only a cursory inspection for concealed weapons.

Doon knew better then to try to sneak a weapon into the castle but he still didn't want to draw any extra attention so he kept has eye low avoided eye contact. He thought about how filthy the dungeon would be and how much must have to scrapped, shoveled, and moved. He thought about some of the people he would likely see in there, dirty and hungry prisoners wasting away in their cells.
He thought about nothing but the possible miserable stuff that would likely await him in the depth of the dungeons. All of this was in the event someone should try to listen to his thoughts. A mind block would send up a flag that something was wrong but thoughts about work should appear just right for someone reporting to work.
Patiently, he moved ahead until it was his turn.

The guard took only a second to glance Doon over. "Destination?" the man asked.

Doon never looked up above the guards boots and spoke softly in a broken southern language with a heavy hobbit accent, "dungeon, me clean." Doon kept the images moving in his mind of the dark, dank space underground of what the dungeons most likely looked like.

The halfling killer made it by the guardhouse. Finding himself in an open courtyard the killer needed to ind his way to the dungeon or at least get lost in the crowd until he figured out his next move.

Doon walked a little faster once he made it passed the guardhouse. Again he made notes of the landmarks in the event he needed to make a hasty escape. As he walked he followed the general direction of the people that had been in front of him.
The dungeons would most likely be underground.., but where? He moved in the general direction of the castle, that seemed like as good as any place to keep a dungeon. On his way he watched out for other halflings. He thought quickly that he might be able to place the dumb card here and out of pity a friendly kin folk might point him in the right direction, even if they didn't know it.

There appeared to be only two other halflings in the crowed and they were much better dressed then Doon's current garb. They had to work inside the castle proper to warrent such cloths.

Doon moved up to them slowly and with obvious effort while glancing around with as much of a nervous look as he could make. He was aware of his filthy appearance the resulting odor from his disguise. He leaned in close and soft hobbit in a loud whisper as if he didn't want to be overheard by a chance passerby and spoke in such a way as to fain a lack of education and with a country-like twang, "Howdy, (giving the greeting to the appropriate gender- sir/ma'am), could y'all help me? My great uncle on my mama's side has gone sick and here to help 'em out until he's on the mend. He said that the humans could never tell all of us apart so he asked my mama to send me to take his place." Looking around again for a moment, "I'm supposed to cleaning something called a dungeon..., I don't know that looks like or where to find one. Could y'all point me in the right direction?" Doon finished and gave a wide, honest smile as he waited for their reply.

"Follow me yung'in. I go right by the dungeon doors on me way to the kitchens." The hobbit introduced himself as chef assistant Kimber Furbottom and seemed to take an instant liking to Doon. As they walked to the main Keep Kimber prattled on instructing the 'new fellow'. "Keep yer 'ead down now and don't look anyone in the eye. Follow? Tis not our place t' be look'n at our betters. Yer uncle should a had you dress a little bett'r but, I giss there be no 'elpin' that now, eh? Remember everyone an' I mean everyone is 'ither Master or Lady. Got it? Don' go an' git yer sel' in trouble by saying sir or mam now alrigh'? There be the doors now. Git on yer way. Good luck to yea yung'in."
Head down yet observant Doon noted at least six guards posted on the way as well as a two guard patrol. The dungeon doors were small and unobtrusive as if the owners didn't want to know people were being starved, tortured or just plain left to die just below their feet.

Doon spoke softly in his "country folk" voice and thanked Furbottom for his help and turned to face the doors. He quickly scanned the doors with his eyes and casually moved to open it and begin his decent. Doon tried his best to move and react as though he had done this a million times.

The stairs plummeted deep beneath the ground. It soon became cold and dank. Torches were lit in sconces every twenty steps and Doon had counted 10 torches before the narrow rock stairs leveled out at a small five foot by five area ending at another door. A single soldier, this time an elf stood motionless as sentry. "State your business." he inquired laconically.

Doon made sure to avert his eyes, he never looked away from the ground. He hucnhed over and threw his arms around his head as if to protect him from an invisible assault, "sorry masta'! P'ease no more hit. Me clean, me clean!" Doon dropped the whole country bumpkin act and went straight for the ignorant, uneducated approach.

"By the Gods get up maggot! Not all of us soldiers beat servants just for fun you know. Get to work and by the Tree of Life grow a spine!" The soldier opened the door and shoved Doon through, slamming the door behind him. On the other side of the door Doon found himself in a corridor. It went straight into darkness, but to his immediate left was a small niche containing a wall sconce with torch, a table, a stool and another guard who cleared his throat when Doon seemed not to notice him. "May I help you?"His tone was gruff and annoyed.

Doon was surprised at how well it worked to get this far and figured that he would stick to his story to see how far it would get him.
Again, he kept his eyes low and figited in place. He stood partially hunched over and spoke with the same uneducated manner, "sorry mast'a, me to clean, me to clean. p'ease no hurt ol' Bogg'n." He then raised his hands weakly, palms out, as if to protect his face.
