Basicly these are people you may hire to travel with you. Every knight needs a squire doesn't he? Couldn't you use a peasant or vagabond to be a torch bearer or trap tester? What about the Scholar who wants to make maps for you or a doctor who wants to see the world? Who knows maybe that bored Noble who you let tag along might just come in handy when you need a loan or a place to sleep when you are near his homeland. Sure that Merchant fellow with wanderlust is soft around the middle and complains a lot but hey, he won't let you get ripped off next time your at market and he's a better cook than YOU are!
Pay the fee they ask and get some cheap help. All Henchmen will re-sign with a party if asked unless abused. If a henchman is not re-signed he MAY or MAY not return to the Hiring Hall. Henchmen gain XP but at a much slower rate then PC's and Retainers. ALL equipment given to the Henchman is considered loaned and must be given back to the party at the end of the agreed hired duration.
