Pith looked at his reflection in his pewter mug with his sapphire blue eyes. The halfling pale ale he was drinking distorted it slightly but he could see he needed a shave. Pith was hairy even by Halfling standards. He had thin brick red stubble all over his rounded face that would grow into a wiry mesh of curly cues if he didn't maintain it with a sharp knife. He turned his head slightly and stared at his fire red sideburns that he kept well groomed for the ladies. His curly red hair was well styled as well and thick as a bears hide. The halfling let out a belch and looked over at his companion seated next to him at the bar in the Drunken Griffin. The dark haired and unkempt Jun stared blankly and slack jawed at Ruby the serving wench while absent mindedly picking the Lord knew what out of his left nostril. Where Pith was considered dapper and a well looking fine catch by halfling standards. Jun was a disheveled mess. His hair was a mass of course, unwashed knots with bits of twigs and leaves here and there. His leather jerkin acquired at the same time as Piths was stained with food and ale and had probably never been polished. Piths on the other hand was oiled daily and well manicured. Jun's boots were ragged with holes, dirty and ill fitting, his various sacks and back pack all had evidence of patches and sections having been sewn together with only minimal care in being done properly. In essence the two halflings were complete opposites. The only things they had in common were that they were friends for life and the most notorious thieves in all of Garrotten...

"You wanna do some lootin' tonight Jun?" Pith asked already knowing the answer.
"Sure thing Pith. Whats the score? I ain't had a good meal all day." Jun replied pulling his finger out of his nose and focusing his dim, lackluster eyes on Pith.
Pith leaned over the table and spoke in a hushed voice to his companion. "Well, I heard that the tunnels the Constables discovered underneath Garrotten run right underneath many of the houses. I figured that we could use these tunnels before Halfhelm turns them into sewers to dig up into one of them and loot it from the ground up." The halfling leaned back, nodding his head at Jun with a conspiratorial smile on his face.
Jun stared back, nodding as well. "Whats a sewer?"
"Whats a...never mind its not important. The thing is they start construction tomorrow so it's got to be tonight. After that the tunnels will be crawling with dwarfs." Pith explained.
"So the tunnels are so small the dwarfs have to crawl through them?" Jun smiled with false understanding. "But there not to small for us right Pith? Hehe."
Pith just stared at his dim witted friend. Sometimes he wasn't sure why he bothered. "You got it Jun. So what do you say?"
"I'm in Pith. Ah can we eat first?"
"Sure thing Jun. Sure thing." Pith smiled and sipped at his ale.

After a meager meal of Turkey legs, a toad-in-a-hole each, stewed vegetables, a honey glazed loaf of oat bread and a small pastry the two half starved halfling thieves went about their work.
Jun was acting look out as Pith searched the statue of the Trinity Pantheon of Gods at the bottom of the hill leading to the castle.
"You sure this is the way into the tunnel Pith?" Jun asked nervously as he kept a watchful eye toward town.
"Of course I'm sure." Pith whispered back. "While I was in jail last night I overheard a couple of the deputies talking. There is some kind of secret entrance in this statue. Just give me a moment. I'll figure it out."
"There has to be an easier way in Pith. Something less exposed maybe?" Jun always got nervous at the beginning of a heist. He mellowed out though as the night went on.
"Well, yeah there is. We can enter through the Tools of the Trade if you like or would you prefer finding a particular tunnel entrance inside Halfhelm's mine?" Pith whispered sarcastically. Halfhelm had caught the two thieves on numerous occasions. He was not their biggest fan. Needless to say they gave the old dwarf a wide birth.
"Just hurry up." Jun shot back in hushed tones.
As if on cue Pith found that if he pressed down hard enough on Mistress death's left foot while pulling up on the big toe the foot depressed a half inch before a panel in the statues base swung open to reveal a spiral iron stair case. rubbing his palms together Pith grinned while motioning Jun to join him.
"See? I told you. Come on lets see what we can find."

The two halflings decsended an iron staircase that opened up into a room with two doors. One was huge and barred. The second was normal sized but sturdy. Lucky for the halflings this door was open. Having just enough night vision to see by the two crept along the passage in the dark as quiet as could be.

The two halflings crept along for what seemed like hours. Tunnel after tunnel, room after room was empty. They even came across a vast empty chamber that had suffered a fire of some kind and another room that could only be described as an underground smithy. Nothing of value remained though. "Bloody dwarfs have been busy, aye Pith?" Commented Jun who was cleaning off a metal mug he had found.
"Tis true but, I never expected to find treasures down here my friend, remember?" Pith replied over his shoulder as they both continued to skulk around.
"Then..oh yeah..we're to dig into homes. Right Pith?"
"Even better. If I'm right then just up ahead we'll be directly below The Tools of the Trade Armory and Smithy." Pith said almost jubilantly.
Not twenty feet further the pair found themselves in a small room with a staircase carved out of stone that led up to a stone slab in the roof. "Jack pot! They even left us a stair way. No digging!"
Jun seemed to brighten at the prospect of less manual labor. As leader of the two Pith never did the hard work.

(dusts off unused writing skills, cracks knuckles and gets back to telling a story)
The stone stairway was short and abruptly ended under a square slab of stone. It took both halflings cramped uncomfortably on the narrow stairs to shove the slab up and out. As quietly as they could they inched it back from it's recess until they could pop their heads up for a look around. They discovered they had entered the Black Smiths shop in some kind of kitchen. In fact they had come up under one of two huge stone fire pits complete with cauldrons. Lucky for the two thieves the other pit was currently being used and not the one they were now using as a secret way into the famous smiths domain.
"Ohh, Jun we're gonna hit it big. Just imagine the high quality weapons or armor we can sell on the black market. Eh?" Pith whispered.
Jun just grinned in return understanding the need to be quiet.
Climbing out of the hearth the two thieves took stock of their surroundings. Pith crept around looking this way and that for any sign of dwarfs still up at this late hour. Jun tasted the stew.

Pith realized he was hungry as well and found two pewter bowls and spoons. The halflings gulped down two helpings each before resuming their burglary. Prowling out of the kitchen they found themselves in a short passage way. Ignoring the first two doors Pith tried the handle of the third and found it satisfactorily locked. "This is it." Stepping aside Pith stood watch as his companion Jun pulled out a set of picks so clean and polished they were at complete odds with the shabby thief.
