Sunny perked up at Barbarius' statement. "The dwarf has a point Bane. Your forest is right there." Sunny points to the vast forest, miles away to the East. We on the other hand have weeks or even months of travel to get home if this tower is destroyed." His voice changed to a whisper and he leaned over his saddle. "Not to mention that would mean traveling with this chattering monk the whole way. Maybe we can negotiate with these Centaurs, or take out this Whinnay fellow."
Meylon was shaking her head the whole time. "No way. I don't need to risk my life for this Xan fellow. Lets get this book to the Knights and head our separate ways. I'm with Dogboy."

"Well hold on a minute, this talkative monk is supposed to be able to help us find this way-station for the knights. If it's not far then maybe we can get there and be back before any serious damage can be done. We need to get Xan to start talking about that which we need to know about. But we will need to stay together until this is finished."

"Xan ain't supposed to take us there! We know where it is! It's about a hundred miles North East past this grass! The Devil's Mark has an outpost there. That's where the Cosmic Knights are!" Barbarius sounds irritated and impatient," We gotta take blather mouth with us cause we promised to, for the quick hop over and a hundred miles ain't no quick jaunt! We'll be gone long enough for my little pony to take this sucker down brick by brick! Man! Thought you dogs had good ears!"

"Watch your tongue half-pint. You're getting grouchy, you must be sobering up. All I'm saying is that Xan is supposed to know this area. As such he could lead us there in the shortest, most direct path. 100 miles is a long way but it is even longer if we drift off course and have to search for it. Besides you think you can find this Devil's Mark when you're getting lost in the weeds?"

" I can find northeast!" Bartbarius barks," We have to take him, we agreed to those terms with that alchemical elf in that town! I just don't want them centaurs to take this tower down! It would be a waste of good magic!"

"First of all, finding northeast and finding a specific spot to the northeast are different things. If we start off even just a little left or right and somehow manage to walk in a straight line, we could still miss it by several miles and not even know it. And since you couldn't even see over the grass I doubt you would have much more success. Second, unless these centaurs have legions of soldiers and heavy seige weapons, they would be lucky to take this tower down in a month. And lastly, just because you benefit from this magic, does not make it good magic. it only makes it magic. Now lets' get Xan and get started. The longer you stand there and pound on your chest the less time we have to reach the Knights. So I'm going to get Xan so we can get moving." In a huff Bane started toward the doorway.

"You know what, I don't care! Just trying to be the sensible one here. Why do a bunch a Centaurs care about a tower is beyond me, ain't they supposed t' be nomads? I mean if that's the case, instead tearing down the tower a bit much? Why don't they just move on? Why don't Xan wanna talk to 'em? These are generally pretty honorable people. Wonder why this Whinnay, guy is giving Xan this much trouble? If the Centaurs used to be "good friends" with Xan, Why'd they stop? Centaurs are pretty loyal to friends. It just ain't right, but whatever. You are so eager to bolt pup, fine. It just ain't right."

"As much as it pains me to agree with you, I do. Something is not right with this situation. Right now I don't know who to believe. We already have trouble following us, we don't need any more of it. I'm willing to lay even money that the alchemist fella is somehow behind this unrest. I just want to fix the more urgent trouble which seems to be with the Knights. If we can fix this problem after, then all the better. Maybe we should find what exactly Xan's mission was out here?"

"Come my friends. Let us eat Xan's food and drink his ale. Maybe we can discover more of what's going on before we make our decision." Sunny tied up his pegasus along side Meylon's horse and the four heroes entered the towers lower level.
Inside the henchmen ate heartily and drank flagons of mead or wine While Xan told stories. With little prompting the group soon discovered that the Monk was using the tower as an observatory of the unique wild life of the Ophid's grasslands. He spoke often of knowledge is power and that violence was unnecessary in any situation involving humanoids.
"Just why do these Centaur's hate your tower so much?" Meylon asked when the time seemed appropriate, but before he could respond there was a knock at the door. The group grew quiet.
"Expecting visitors?" Sunny inquired. Xan shook his head for once at a loss for words.
"Bane, Barbarius. Check it out."
The two companions noticed that the stone door was heavy looking but, appeared to open by way of a pulley system. There were no windows on this level so it was imposable to see whom or what was outside.

Barbarius walks over to the door," Pull the door open, pup!" Barbarius barks as he waits for the door to open to see who was outside. He stands with his fists at his waist, waiting to find out who would be bothering them right now.

Bane didn't appreciate have Barbarius telling what to do but it did make sense that he watch the door. Being so short he would be at the best vantage point to identify the visitor. Barb might even get the chance to kill something finally. Best case scenerio, Bane thought to himself, he could drop the door on Barb and be done with it.
Taking his place at the pulley Bane takes another glance at the door. Bane leaned his polearm against the wall next to him in the case he should need it quickly. Finally, Bane began working the pulley. Slowly at first then faster as the door began to move.

Standing just outside the door looking skittish was a female centaur. Not just any female but one of the two from earlier. Her odd hammer was missing and she looked at Barbarius pleadingly in the fading light with soft brown eyes. Dark was fast approaching. "Please let me in. I must speak with Xan before I am missed." she spoke in elven.

" Yeah. sure," Barbarius steps aside and helps her in," Come on lass. Get in." Barbarius takes another quick scan with his new eye to make sure this wasn't a trap and then turns to Bane an gives him the thumbs down to shut the door.

Bane quickly dropped the door, just in case she had brought friends he would try to keep them from passing further. Once the door was once again closed, Bane grabbed his polearm and moved closer to hear what the centaur had to say.

As the door was closing Barbarius gave the outside a scan with his normal eye as well as his new one. Seeing nothing however he grunted in disappointment as yet another perceived opportunity to split some heads passed uneventfully.
The mare looked uncomfortable inside the walled in tower. Her black, eyes darted everywhere as if looking for a way out and her hoofs clip-clopped even as she stood in place before Xan and Sunny's band of adventurers. "Xan please. Whinnay is sick in the head. He means to take your tower for his own and rule the plains with it."
Xan waves her away in dismissal. "That's nonsense Windillia. Your people are nomads they care nothing for walls and permanent structures."
Windillia whinnied in dismay. "I know only what I have seen and heard. He has found books. Human books that talk of power bases and forts. Defenses and Castles, as well as large machines of war. He is fevered I tell you. He has the tongue of a dervish and has swayed the council of the nine. They have banded together and come to take the tower for themselves. By Sun up you will be besieged by a hundred centaur armed with massive weapons that throw giant rocks and spear. Please Xan. We must stop him."
Xan for the first time since the party met him seems at a loss for words.
