Gaul just grinned and tossed Firebug another rock. After an experimental taste Firebug was sure it was a salt rock of some kind. It amazed the mystic how smart the dumb looking orc could really be.

Firebug smiled back to Gaul as he tucked the rock into one of his belt pouches. "Come my clever little friend. Let's wait for for our trap to be sprung."

Gaul had gnawed his rock to a pebble before the Troll finally showed itself. The tension of the party was palpable to the Mystics acute senses. The Troll was huge. Ten feet at the very least it was outfitted in a long suit of chain mail. The skirting slapped against the trolls shins with every step. The beast carried a massive hammer over its left shoulder, most likely forged by the turn coat dwarfs in Halfhelm's employ. The monster was sniffing the air and for a moment Firebug thought they had been discovered. Yet just as Gaul had said he couldn't smell the troll through the overwhelming smell of horse meat so to the troll could not detect the party. In moments the troll found the shank and tore into it with great vigilance. It was devoured in less time then it would take Reeks to down a tankard of ale. When it was finished the beast smacked it's lips and belched loudly. The hidden group glanced at one another. Could the troll truly not have felt the mettle needles within the meat? Had they punctured the skin? Firebug surely wasn't interested in taking on this brute in hand to hand.
Firebug had no more time to ponder it as the troll continued on it's trek up the sloped passage as if finding a mutilated horse shank was common in a mine tunnel.
"Maybe it will take time?" Siff whispered.
"Well it's gettin' away though it seems in no great hurry." Reeks added. It was true. the troll just lumbered along at a slow walk.

In a whisper Firebug said, "something is wrong. Gaul, I need you to trail him from a distance. If he sees you, I know that you can easily out run him and lead him back here. Maybe we should bring another flank of meat over here?"

Gaul nodded with a toothy grin and padded after the troll.
"What kind of poison are we usin' anyway?" Reeks whispered doubtfully.
Siff looked around nervously. "Uhh, I'm not sure I could find where we left the other meat from here." She sounded frustrated. "Urr, I'm so useless down in these tunnels."
"Silverbeard could find the meat and catch up to us." Reeks suggested.

Firebug nodded, "good call Reeks. Afterall, what kind of tracker would get lost. I want to check out that tunnel that the troll came from. He must be bedding down somewhere down there. Bet we could set up an ambush for him. Silverbeard, since we have found this troll's active area, could you please bring a portion of the meat that we had left earlier? We'll drop it off somewhere else along this path of his. Let's go, we might not have much time."
As they moved to tunnel Firebug produced the vial, "It is supposed to be eye of the basalisk. Purhaps this fella is tougher then we give him credit. And my dear Siff, you are not useless. We are in the underground. We are not suited to life here like Reeks. Without him and Silverbeard we would quickly become lost and most likely desert for the troll. Now lets' put such thoughts out of our minds and see what we can find out about this troll."

Silverbeard backtracked down the tunnel without a word. The three remaining companions took the path the Troll had come from in hopes of finding his lair. Fortunatly for them the Trolls tracks were easy to identify at this point and so fresh that Reeks had no trouble leading the way. The few side passages they came accross were undisturbed and easily dismissed. After awhile a great stench filled the already stagnent air of the mine. Soon after a few small bones could be seen littering the floor.
"Getting close now I'll wager." Reeks said excitedly.
"Uhh, we're sure there was only one escaped troll right? I mean were the rest all acounted for?"

In a loud whisper, "well it's not like we have an exact head count here. I only saw the one before the fight at the forge," Firebug replied. He thought for a moment then continued, "I suppose it is possible that there could be more, but maybe you could prey for us?"

"He-he." Siff laughed quietly yet almost hysterically. "I haven't stopped since we came down here.
Soon the passageway was littered with bones some that could only be dwarven in nature. Reeks started mumbling in his native tongue.
A minute later the lantern revealed the Trolls makeshift living area at the end of the tunnel. A ratty looking blanket in one corner. A table made from a turned over mine cart minus it's wheels and a pile of various digging tools all too small for the troll. On top of the improvised table was an old, battered, iron helmet that was half filled with what looked like water and to Firebug's surprise two nice sized gold nuggets.

"Don't even worry about it Siff. With all of the goings on around here, maybe I should be more cautious." Firebug moved to the table and looked at the helmet and eyed the gold, then looked at the bed. "I'd say that based on the amount of bones here, this fella isn't starved. Oh, no disrespect intended Reeks. It almost looks like this guy isn't lost at all but is merely..., working. I think I need to have a closer look at his thinks. Reeks and Siff please keep an eye for trouble please." With his eyes closed Firebug placed his hands on the makeshift bed and opened his mind.

Images of the Troll instantly flooded Firebug's mind. He got the sense that the beast was more selfish then evil, just in the ring for the money. Most of the visuals were of the creature sleeping or getting dressed in chain mail. Firebug focused harder on locating him right now. It was difficult but he felt as if he was flying down the tunnel passageways similar to being in astral form. Left, straight left again. Suddenly there was the troll. Running. He was running with his hammer in both hands. Firebug felt anger and joy from the Troll. He was close.
Firebug awoke disoriented. Siff was shaking his shoulders and yelling, but the mystic couldn't make out the words. It was like being underwater. Everything was distorted and muffled. Suddenly without warning Siff slapped him across the face and everything snapped back into focus with an audible CLICK.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, we need you!" Siff screamed apologetically.
"Wha..?" was all he got out. Looking around he sensed nothing but urgency. The make shift table was turned on it's side. the gold nuggets were laying in the dust of the floor. Under the table was an odd looking crank device. It looked as if it had been made with bits of wood and broken tools. Whatever it's original purpose it was now clearly broken. Attached to the mechanism was a rope. Following it with his eyes Firebug saw that it ran along the base of the wall, up the far wall through metal ringlets and finally...ended in a tie off attached to a huge portcullis that barred the entry way into the Troll's lair. The portcullis was made of make shift steel beams, most likely track from the mining tracks. They had been lashed together with rope and thick wire. It looked very sturdy.
It didn't take a mystic to realize they were now trapped inside. Reeks was lifting and shoving on the bars with no luck and Siff just kept talking filling in the details.
"...got bored and figured there may be some more gold hidden beneath the table. He lifted it and then this...gate came flying out of the ceiling with dried mud falling everywhere."
That's as far as she got before yet another disturbance interrupted. Gaul came running down the tunnel, feet flapping against stone. He looked terrified. Gaul and Reeks started shouting at the same time.
"Gaul! Gaul! Let us out, let us out." Reeks pushed and pulled for emphasis.
"Let me in! Let me in!" the Orc cried as he slammed into the portcullis pulling and pushing in exact opposite of Reeks defeating both of their efforts. "The Troll comes! Quick, quick!"

Firebug moved toward the gate and reached out for Gaul's hand. He looked into Gaul's eyes and spoke softly, "Be brave my friend. We will do what we can from in here. Use your gile to avoid him. You have to believe that we will protect you."
Looking toward Reeks Firebug tried to speak with the same calm voice, "Reeks do you still have that vile I gave you? I would suggest that you begin dipping bolts."
"Siff, find something to start breaking these smaller wires and rope. When you find something, start on the left side here. Once some of these sections are loose we might be able to make enough room for Gaul to slip in. "

When Gaul agreed that he felt protected by Firebug's words he subconciously accepted the spell of Ithan's armor the Mystic cast under his breath. Gaul could not feel nor see the magical suit that now encased him but, he turned and drew his sword.
It was only a moment later when Firebug's mystical sixth sense flashed an image of danger from ahead. The Troll would be here in seconds.
Reeks had his heavy Crossbow cranked and loaded with a poisoned bolt. Siff franticly cut away at rope and wire.
Firebug made a last ditch effort to contact Silverbeard through telepathy but, he must have been out of range. He couldn't find the dwarfs mind.
The Troll rounded the corner.

Firebug readied himself as the troll came around the corner. He seemed bigger somehow then Firebug had expected. There was almost a glint of joy in the eye of the creature when he saw everyone trapped by the gate. Both in and out.
Gaul with his sword drawn was way over his head and would be killed if those trapped behind the iron bars could do something. Firebug focued on the troll's head. He can't hit what he can't see. Firebug prepared a firebolt and intended to remove some of the troll's current advantages. Firebug secretly hoped that maybe he could draw the troll's attention away from Gaul and in doing so maybe the troll would move the gate in order to get to him. Then Firebug realized, he might want to be careful what he wished for.

RECAP!
The Psi-Mystic Firebug and his troop of adventurers while solving a murder stumbled upon a large weapon smuggling operation. While most of the smugglers themselves were captured, the ring leader escaped through a secret door in one of the towns statues. A scroll given to a demonic looking creature called a Gromek from the mysterious ring leader was recovered from the slayed creature and given to the local constabulary. In side the scroll was a letter written in elven;
Master Slayer,
The last weapon shipment went out as scheduled. Once again the King will learn of an attack on the caravan. If all goes well only one more should be needed for your horde. That will officially end my part of the agreement. Not a moment to soon I fear as our operation here had been discovered. Luckily the man was a town drunkard and has been eliminated by Wolgar and Hins. I expect you to uphold your end till your master is ready to make his move. May the Prince hide you in darkness always.
Till our Masters return, BoG
so far Firebug has shared this letter only with the Lord Constables. Currently with the aid of a dwarven Bounty hunter named Silverbeard the party is tracking down the last remaining smuggler. The rest of the smugglers were put to death before much information was revealed. The Constibles were not happy with the Baron;s decission. The fleeing troll who escaped and is now finding it's way underground into the towns iron mine is the only remaining lead to the ring leader and the mysterious letter. While hunting the troll the hunters became trapped by the tricky troll who now berrals down upon them. All the members but two are trapped in a caged off section of tunnel that the troll has been using as a home. Silverbeard is elsewhere in the mines and por Gaul is left alone to fight a rampaging troll.
See anything I missed, left out or you feel is important?
