[Continued from 'do you believe in fate?']
Silverbeard began looking for signs of the trolls passing. Everywhere he looked there were boot prints of dwarves, goblins, orcs....many humanoids had come this way over the past year. It took the bountyhunter a good half hour to finally pick up the beasts trail. It lead off deeper into the mine for a good four hundred yards. After that it crissed and crossed down a half dozen side tunnels. The creature was either lost or came through here often.
"This is a good spot to set one of your offerings. He comes through here regularly." Without further explenation Silverbeard took a side passage that had the freshest set of tracks. Just a hundred feet further the tunnel forked with tracks coming and going both directions. The dwarf scanned the intersection and picked a good spot. "Here." he pointed and continued on.

The rest of the group could only stand and watch Silverbeard as if he were a dog on the scent of a rabbit. Firebug was the first to put down his stinking lump if horse meat. He was glad to be rid of the weight and smell of it. Firebug laid it at the exact spot which Silverbeard pointed. Keeping his voice low so as to not betray the presence the search party, "if he is passing through here that often, where do you think he is going?"

Silverbeard grunted. "Could be lost, could be setting traps, looking for food. Who knows."
The dwarf went right but, after fifty feet stopped and turned around heading left instead. The tunnel branched twice with the Bounty Hunter pausing at each intersection. He'd look at rocks, dust, and smudges that Firebug had no inkling to what they were. Darting off again the dwarf stopped and turned around. "Clever." was all he barked. Heading back down one of the side passages that the dwarf had dismissed earlier he seemed back on track. Soon the tunnel opened up into a cavern. It had five smaller tunnels leading off from it. In the center of the two hundred foot diameter area were some old mining tools and piles of scree. "Looks like a good spot to me." Silverbeard commented.

Firebug motioned to Lady Siff, then helped her set her foul horse meat chunk on the ground. "Do you think he holed up somewhere and is just coming out to look for food? Or is he lost looking for a way out of the mines?" Firebug kept his voice low. The last thing he wanted was for his voice to begin echoing in these tunnels. That troll would not only know they were there but could give him a chance to ambush them in this maze of tunnels and passageways.
Firebug began to feel anxious as they retraced the trolls travels. This beast could be around the next turn. With his mind racing about what could be, he absent-mindedly began feeling for his lucky charm hanging around his neck.

Silverbeard tugged on his beard in thought.
"I'd say it was both. He's looking for a way out. Thats why the tracks seem to run every which way. He's also foraging for food till he does find an exit. He's holed up somewhere. Any mention of missing minors? Could be he's resorted to cannibalism. Not that thats a moral issue for a troll."

Firebug shook his head, "yes, at least one. Remember those miners at the pub? When I mentioned the mines, that one miner mentioned that a friend of theirs had gone missing."

"Then we're lookin' for dwarf bones." Silverbeard began looking at tracks again to decide what tunnel to take from here.

Silverbeard headed off down one of the endless tunnels only to double back and try another. Fifteen minutes later the group found them selves back in the chamber with the horse meat. "Damn." was all the bounty Hunter said before continuing on. Another fifteen minutes of traveling lead the group to another intersection. This time it is a four way cross with one tunnel headed at a steep incline. "All right everyone. This is it. Place whatever we have left for bait here. Our troll believes this tunnel here leads up and out and has been exploring in daily by the looks of these tracks." Silverbeard turns to Firebug. "I've done my part. Now what?"

Firebug scrathed his chin in thought for a moment as he stared down the passage that angles up as if to the surface. After a long and uncomfortable silence Firebug turned to Gaul and placed a hand on his shoulder, "Gaul, you have a gifted nose. Do you think you might try to see if that troll has been holed up around here. If he has been wandering around here he might also be sleeping in one of these tunnels."
Turning back to the surface bound tunnel, "Silverbeard can you determine which of all these tracks would be the freshest? I mean, can you determine which way he might have last traveled?

Gaul sniffed the air. "No good. Nothing but horse."
"I'll figure it out." Silverbeard replied. Looking around the room for ten minutes he Finally nodded, satisfied. "He's down here somewhere. He ain't been up this way in almost a day."

Firebug handed the vial with the remaining poison, "here, you and Silverbeard might want to dip a bolt in this. Gaul, I understand you have been collecting an impressive arsonal of poisons yourself. I would suggest you coat your sword as well, but let's try not to kill him just yet. He may have some very valuable information for us."
For a moment Firebug only stared down the corridor that Silverbeard had pointed to. He calmed his mind and readied himself for the upcoming fight. Trolls are tough but he was confident his group. Finally, in a soft tone, "everyone needs to be on their toes. Let's go."

"Are we going to hunt him then?" Siff asked a little nervously. "I thought the plan was to sit back and let him drug himself on horsemeat?"

"that is my intension but there could be another maze of tunnels on the other end of this one. What say the rest of you? Should we venture further or wait for the troll to come back this way? Reeks, any ideas about this tunnel?"

"I say we stick it out here." Reeks commented. "Though we may miss him in one of the previous tunnels we set traps at if this tunnel circles around." he added.
"Not likely." Silverbeard said. "He's been coming this way often and this has been the best spot so far. I doubt we'll have to wait long before he shows himself."
"He's the hunter." Siff added. Lets set up a ways back then and see what happens."
The group looked to Gaul to see if he had anything to add but, he was busy vigorously licking a fist sized rock.

"Alright, then we will watch this tunnel. Everyone fall back and clear this passageway. Let's wait for the meat to flush this troll." Firebug moved down the passageway until the tunnel's entrance was just barely in view. The rock that Gaul was licking caught Firebug's attention. He had heard about certain stones that you could suck on and quench your thirst and salt licks. Firebug scanned the ground for another rock like the one Gaul. "Hey Gaul, what are you doing?"
