"Ain't nothin' gonna happen to you, babe," Barbarius gently pushes the tankard back to her chest,"And if if somethin' does, I'll take it then, but you need ta stop talkin' that way!" Barbarius isn't too happy anymore. Marissa has brought him way down with this sudden loss of hope. Why was she doing this? Barbarius was more than capable to protect her, why was she acting like this?

The three continued in silence for two hours. Dawn washed the fields in golden light. Barbarious suddenly heard galloping from behind. Turning around, his mysterious new eye zoomed over the plains. He had a sense of vertigo for a moment as the sensation of the focusing made him feel as if he was flying at great speeds. Just as quickly the sensation was gone to revealt Windillia approaching off in the distance.
"What is it?" Marrissa quarried to the dwarf. "Bane hold!"

"It's Windillia," Barbarius continues to watch her. Wondering why she was following.

The trio decided to continue walking instead of waiting for Windillia. She'd catch up eventually. Sure enough within another thirty minutes the Centaur was wishing salutations on the heroes. She wore a crown made of wheat in her mane that was not there before.
"I'm glad I found you. I was unable to thank you fully back at camp so I decided to come and do it properly. I have been made the new war chief by the council of nine. For that unexpected boon I feel I am in your debt. Please take these tokens of my appreciation."
With that she hands the three companions a fist sized egg each. The small end of each has been cut away and stuffed with bits of leather to act as a stopper. The eggs slosh with liquid.
"These are healing drinks to keep you safe and healthy. Each egg contains three doses. May they serve you well. I also wish to give you this." The Centaur war chief hands Marrissa a huge gold coin with the visage of a dragon on both sides. It is also encrusted with gems. "My people have not use for such currencies so it is yours as payment for your deeds."

"This is too kind of you Windillia, or should I say chieftan? Is there anything you could tell us about this area? Or maybe about the Devil's Mark?" Bane spoke with a short bow.

"The Mark? Ah! I think I heard Xan speak of such a place. We know it as the Bloody Gash. A terrible place. My grandmother says an elven hermit lives there. That is all I know. Be careful though. You are heading into bugbear territory. Very dangerous to travel in small numbers."

"Thank you for the advice, but we are not concerned," Bane said as he pointed a thumb toward Barbarius, "we have the champion."

Barbarius walks over and gives Windillia's hind quarters a sharp, yet friendly slap followed by a soothing rub. " BUGBEARS? Ah the pup here can handle my light work!" Barbarius smiles and winks at Windillia," Congrats on the promotion, there Windillia. 'Member, you and yours ever get into a jam, call on ol' uncle Barbarius and I'll see to it that there ain't no more trouble! Thanks for the juice and advise. Are we headin' the the right direction? I think our pup here is getting us lost." Barbarius flashes a shit eating grin at Bane.

"oh please. You have been lost in the bottom of a flagan for years. However, we should get moving if we ever hope to reunite with the rest of our companions."

With friendly farewells Windillia trots off the way she came while the three companions continue onward to try and reconnect with the others.

Bane holds his course trusting his gut and experience to catch up with the others. The grass begins to thin out the further north they head. Small rocks and boulders start to dot the landscape and the grass becomes shorter and more stunted but still prevailant. Barbarius can finally see for what seems like forever in all directions.
Hours later without warning Marrissa pitches to her left with a grunt and slams to the ground hard. Bane who was leading, glances back in time to see a human, fist sized, rock roll to a halt just a few feet from where the Bard now lay in a pool of blood that was spreading through the yellow grass and dirt. The wolfen's eyes dart left and right but, he can't see the aggressor anywhere. His keen hearing though does pick up odd sounds of movement to the west and he gets a whiff of something canine yet unfamiliar and tainted with something unnatural.
Barbarius was in the rear guard position when it happened. At first he only saw the rock appear out of nowhere to strike Marrissa but, as he scanned the area his mechanical eye made a 'whurrrr' sound and in an eye blink his vision changed. Ten creatures, just silhouettes really, came loping toward the trio. They appeared to be squat, broad, humanoids of some kind armed with clubs or stone axes. The tallest was five feet or so. It was difficult to tell do to the lack of detail. Of their features he could discern nothing.

"WHAT THE..." Barbarius runs over to Marissa, "This must be the bugbears Windillia was yapping about." He gives her a look over and tries to assess the damage. "I can see 10 of them over there," Barbarius points in the direction. Turning to Marissa," Come on baby, don't die on me. Barbarius puts his lips to her lips feeling if there is any breath coming out.

"Try giving her a sip of that egg thing. I don't think we want these guys to get ahold of her..., alive or dead. When you're ready, I'll try to save you one or two, but you'd better hurry." Bane tried to taunt Barbarius. A pack of anything is dangerous and he knew that he would need that axe of Barbarius.
With polearm drawn, Bane moved between Marissa/Barbarius and the bugbears to buy some time. Taking on a defensive stance, Bane roared in an effort to disrupt the pack, "Which of you dies first!?"

While Bane could smell the creatures and hear them coming he failed to see any sign of them until another rock careened off his alien armor with a thud. (7 to hit. AR 14) Where the hell were they hiding?

Barbarius checks on Marissa and thankfully hears her groan as he rolls her over on her side. She has a nasty scalp wound notorious for bleeding unless stopped. She appears dazed.
